The Necessity of Reminders for Spiritual Growth (Part 1)

The reminder of the diligent pursuit of growth (2 Peter 1:12-15).  In these verses, Peter gives four insights into his ministry of jogging believer’s memories:

  1. Peter’s Readiness to Remind Believers (v.12)

  3. Peter’s Motivation to Remind Believers (v.14)
  4. Peter’s Determination to Remind Believers (v.15)

The Objective Doctrine of Perseverance or Eternal Security

The doctrine is grounded in the promises, the character, and the work of God.  Passages for reference:

Subjective experience of Assurance of Salvation

  • Grounded in faith in the scriptures teaching on perseverance
    • Hebrews 4:2
  • Grounded in the Spirit’s inner witness

  • Grounded in the evidence of a changed and maturing life
    • 1 Peter 1:8-10
    • 1 John 5:13
  • There is an assurance that is inherent in faith and there are degrees of assurance.

Common Reasons for Lacking Assurance:

  • The folly of living by feelings.
    • Hebrews 12:1,6
  • The pride of craving self-righteousness
    • Philippians 3:9
  • Wrong expectations about battling sin.

  • Insecurity regarding childhood conversion
    • 2 Timothy 3:14-15
  • Misunderstandings God’s Discipline
